Torchwood Season 1

So, rewatching, just finished "They Keep Killing Suzie", and I'm reminded of why I never got into the fandom then and why I was pretty happy I didn't get into fandom then.

Because the emotional continuity doesn't make sense, the characterization and tone are all over the place, and how the hell does Ianto go from "I hate you OMG Lisa" to "Stopwatch Time 'cos you need comfort! :D" in 2 months?

I mean, you can make it work... but not very well.

And Jack and Gwen, the inconsistent characterization makes me cry.

*Headdesk*

Heh. Yeah, S1 did have its bizarre character moments. The only way that one makes any kind of sense is if Ianto had already been sexually involved with Jack before "Cyberwoman," and this was him deciding to pick up their relationship again. S2 Ianto was so much more win.

The actor actually said that, so that's the interpretation I'm going with. Except I don't see Ianto going straight for the stopwatch, so he would've restarted a sexual relationship with Jack less than two months after "Cyberwoman"--which, while possible, is just a bit mind-boggling. Especially when one also tries to figure out what's going through Jack's mind.

Ianto's character arc is just so badly defined, and it makes S1 Gwen (who suffered from too much screen-time as well as really inconsistent characterization, IMO) seem really well done in comparison.

S2 Ianto was so much more win.

Most definitely.

Best. Snark. Ever.

Hell, about the only team member who had a character arc that made any sense was Owen, and it would've been shite if Burn Gorman hadn't been arguably the best actor on the show. I'm so glad the writing got tighter in S2.

I am in so much agreement here. And even Owen's character got toned down for season 2 (which was such a good idea).

Jack's "I want to die" angst also made some sense, but as that was only one part of his character, it really wasn't enough to make up for the rest.
