Musings on "Eclipse"
So... a day after getting the book, I have finished "Eclipse" by Stephanie Meyer (I would have finished it last night had I not had my driving exam today; I totally got my license, btw! XD) and, as a result, have me quite a few thoughts on it. And here they be, under a cut, just in case some of you are reading too.
Okay, yet another Stephanie Meyer book that absolutely hooked me—this woman can write, and she can write SUCH interesting plotlines. I really like the book as a whole, the adventure, the ideas behind it, etc. Well thought-out and very interesting. The one real “writing” error I could spot was this: Ms. Meyer does have problems creating realistic dialogue when someone else is telling a story. She writes the dialogue too much like a book and too little like something someone would actually say. A minor problem, yes, but it jarred me out of the story.
And my other major issue, probably the issue that’s keeping me from enjoying “Eclipse” as much as I enjoyed “Twilight” and “New Moon”—two out of the three main characters annoy the hell out of me in this book. Bella is realistic character, yes, but she can be so dumb and, through the course of these three books, she never seems to grow or change or learn from her mistakes. As for Jacob… after really liking him in “New Moon”, he just becomes such a prat. I mean, he threatens to kill himself if Bella won’t kiss him. And she doesn’t care. And this kiss makes her realize she loves him. And then we have 73h angst.
And then Edward is THANKFUL she chose him instead of Jacob!
Dear God, get angry, get frustrated, get… something! Wow, I sound just like Bella here… And honestly, I’m not upset with the character of Edward, I love him in this book, he’s perfect. I just feel really bad for him, actually, because honestly, he gets screwed over. Out of all three main characters, he’s the only one who doesn’t make someone’s life worse, doesn’t angst (which is so odd for him), and isn’t an ass. Plus, Bella/Jacob is just a pairing I can barely tolerate… and it’s sort of half the purpose of this book. @_@
To quote Jacob, “Sure, sure,” I know it’s realistic, but that doesn’t make it any less irritating because Bella and especially Jacob are just so obnoxious about their relationship.
Bah, and I really like this book too! The characters’ histories, the Third Wife (love how that bit was done), the battle between the newborns/Victoria and the Cullens/werewolves, the relationship between Edward and Bella… all of it is so well done, and I’m invested in the text throughout. But there’s such a major plot point that just bugs me to NO freaking end...
So… yeah, definite mixed feelings about “Eclipse” that I just had to share with my fl, even if probably no one has read the book but me. :P But really, y'all should check it out, because it IS a good book. It just has its flaws, and besides that "writing" flaw, the flaws are really just centered around my opinions.
