SitL Thoughts: Very Mixed Feelings Here
May. 31st, 2008 09:53 pmWell first off, I love the spoilers meta. And from a within-story perspective, Moffat rocks. As always. Great build-up, the shadows even freaked me out, and I'm very intrigued by the "saving". So, if this were the only story of DW I ever saw, I would be thrilled. Honestly. Ecstatic. Go Moffat!
But, two things:
1. His writing of Donna: In this episode, she was far far too bitchy. And if she were suspicious of River Song, then fine, I'd believe it. But... she's more observant than that. She's more patient than that. Yes, she can be abrasive and rude, but unless there is something really really wrong, not to this extent.
Though I did love her interactions with the girl who died but whose name I forget. That there is Donna being lovely.
2. And it bothers me that this bothers me, but while I like River Song the character, the whole future!Doctor/River Song thing is really impeding on my enjoyment of the episode. And, yes, a lot of this is my Doctor/Rose love getting prodded, but another part of it is, from a storytelling perspective... why tell a love story (even of some future date) right before the character we already had a love story with comes back? To show life goes on? (Then why have the Doctor mourn/pine for a season?) To show he can commit, just not with any of his companions?
It's just... bah. If I had more distance from the show, then the second bit wouldn't bother me and I'd be intrigued, adore it even. The whole diary thing is very clever, for instance, and hell, I'd probably enjoy it more if I hadn't read the spoilers. I mean, I loved GitF, which also didn't work so well from an overall storytelling POV. But as is...
*Shakes head*
I need a rewatching when I'm less judgmental, though the Donna-writing is always going to bug me.
So, all in all, 4/5. And I'm very intrigued to see where it goes. :)
