Jul. 25th, 2011 06:32 pmLivejournal! I have missed you!!!
I need to share more DS9 thoughts with you. :D
Season 4 remains good. I even loved Bashir as James Bond going "Honey," though mainly because Garak did all the eye-rolling for me.
Gender politics remain terrible, and I don't know whether I'm frustrated or amused that Kira and Samantha Carter are treated about the same in their relationships (powerful men in love with them, yay gender essentialism despite what else might be important about this character).
There's some great Kira/Sisko friendship stuff going on, though, and Dax is her own character, and Odo is awesome. As is Garak. And Dukat. Even Sisko's interesting now, and Bashir (on his own, despite the sexism) is growing on me. The character interactions are all interesting and work. Absolutely loving the overarching plot, though I can see where all the B5 rivalry came from.
I am amused that it took a literal growth of beard for this show to suddenly become awesome.
ETA: ( Spoilers re: Garak's relationships and OH GOD EW )

moar ds9 thoughts - same-sex edition
Jul. 25th, 2011 02:08 amDear DS9,
I am quite enjoying this same-sex relationship/marriage commentary episode. It's fun. And, thus far, actually good. And I love that the taboo isn't the same-sex aspect but, instead, the "Trills that knew one another" aspect.
I'd appreciate it a lot more, though, if your 'verse had same-sex relationships in the first place. Cop-outs are annoying. Even if you were written over a decade ago.
Grumbling and--WAIT, WHY DOES KIRA HAVE PURPLE HAIR IN THIS SCENE, IS IT THE LIGHTING OR IS IT ACTUALLY HER HAIR, YES I HAVE THE ATTENTION SPAN OF A RABBIT

Torchwood: Miracle Day - Shallow Rxn Post
Jul. 23rd, 2011 12:16 pm1) Women doing stuff not just about men or babies - check. Like, Bechdel all over the place, spirit and letter. I miss you RTD...
2) A 'sexy man likes my coat' reference that I'm going to take as a shout out to Ianto. ( Small non-important spoiler ) I mean, we already had an outright Owen reference. Now I just want some Tosh.
3.( Small non-plot-important spoiler )
4. Great Jack moments, ngl. Even if it is more of RTD's sadism towards Jack's character. Missing RTD a little less due to repetitiveness.
ETA: Oh RTD... you really dislike the human race. And corporations. But mainly the human race. Oh RTD.
ETA2: There are new Radio Plays??? Cool.

Garak and Bashir give each other chocolates. They give each other chocolates.
...Okay,
wemblee, you're right. They're not just fucking. They're dating.
This is my canon, and I'm sticking to it.

(...Yeah, there'll be a lot of these entries until I finish my rewatch.)
I have a new litmus test for determining whether an episode is good. Yes, if Garak is in it, but there's a 50/50 chance of incredible suckage otherwise. Generally amusing Swamp Thing-type suckage (but nowhere near that bad), though there's a good deal of horrible offensiveness too.
...Like this episode. Which makes me sad, because the last episode was awesome.
It is getting better circa s3. The Dominion + Odo growing as a character + Garak & Dukat showing up more = pretty awesome.
I'm also writing Julian/Garak. It's fun.
ETA: ...The Star Trek version of history is like a video game. I'm waiting for the zombie apocalypse.

wemblee:
Give me a pairing and I will tell you:
1. What they most commonly do during sex
2. Who has prettier hair
3. What they argue about most often
4. Who'd cope best if the other one died
5. The happiest plausible happily-ever-after I can think of for them.
ETA: Have some fandoms (though this is by no means an exhaustive list):
Farscape
Doctor Who
Fringe
Swamp Thing (the live action tv show... I'm disappointed in myself for this one)
Torchwood (pre-Miracle Day)
Stargate SG1
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (as of yesterday, really)
Dead Like Me
Pirates of the Caribbean
The X-Files

Oh sci-fi...
Jul. 17th, 2011 11:39 pmRewatching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, I don't know whether to be horrified at the gender politics of the show or...
Actually, no, that's about the only option there.
Sad part is, I'm still not sure how much "better" mainstream sci-fi has really gotten. There seem to be more (and more interesting) women, but condescending man = romance and lolmisogyny still seem fairly prevalent.
In other news, I just made soup. I may have overcooked it somewhat, but eh, I am proud of Never-Cooks-Ever Me.

Ryan Murphy - still a terrible person
Jun. 29th, 2011 12:56 pmFor anyone who is still torn on Glee and on Ryan Murphy, its showrunner, watch episode 3 of The Glee Project (...shuttup).
The theme of the week is Vulnerability. ( Potential TW for sexual assault ) As a result, she ends up in the bottom 3. After delivering a kick-ass last-chance performance wherein she is praised by all three of the judges, she gets kicked off the show instead of two white boys, one of whom was boring at best.
Not so incidentally, she's Latina. Not so incidentally, every single judge in this show is a man. The only women are the choreographer (periodically) and the person at the recording studio (forget her title).
I did not think I could hate this show and these showrunners any more than I already do.

Okay, people. I need you to take this viral, and fast.
We know someone in upstate New York who needs a good custody lawyer ASAP. I'm not at liberty to go into details publicly, but this woman is very afraid that her abusive boyfriend is going to get sole custody of her young child. She's presently being represented by a court-assigned lawyer who doesn't seem to care about the case, and she has very few resources left at this point. Her next hearing is on Thursday.
If you know a good lawyer in New York State who might be willing to take this case for a low fee or pro bono, or at least offer her advice or support, please let me know. If you don't know anyone, please repost this far and wide. As a mother and an abuse survivor, it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to contemplate a child being left in the hands of an abuser.
I can be reached at kythryne@gmail.com if you have any leads or want to help.
The internet can work miracles. Let's go.
Edit, Tuesday afternoon: Huge, huge thanks to everyone who has signal-boosted, offered resources, emailed me, and otherwise been willing to help. Our friend is overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers. Amy and I are driving over to New York tomorrow afternoon so we can provide support in person, and we are working on plans to help our friend and her daughter get back on their feet once the custody case is over.
(If you would be interested in donating an item or service to a fundraising auction in the near future, please let me know. Our friend is a talented artist and a wonderful mother to a beautiful little girl who deserves a safe home, and it wouldn't take much to make a huge difference in their lives.)

Poniiieeeeeessss
Jun. 6th, 2011 01:21 pmSo I'm finally working my way through My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
It's fun.
I'm a bit disturbed that the very first episode has Twilight ( Spoilerz ), and I'd love more perspectives on that. But otherwise it's a cute ~moral of the week~ type show that's actually really cute and fun. And has a bunch of girls doing stuff that isn't just boys or babies but, you know, determined by personal interests and living one's life, which is awesome.
Also, make Pinky Pie less social and... yup, that's meeeee-ee. *Bounce bounce bounce*

Doctor Who Mid-Season Finale Reactions
Jun. 5th, 2011 02:24 pmYou know, I actually enjoyed that. I mean, despite the sexism, as that's always there, but still.
( What I liked )
( What I liked... not so much )
In conclusion, Moffat can write, and write well. I just wish he wasn't like so many other male writers in that his writing is also really damn sexist.
