Gap Year

I so need a gap year between senior year and the year I start college.... Now all that's left is to convince me 'rents. @_@ Wish me luck.

And yes, I do have a plan. I want to either stay with relatives in Russia or take a program there. I want to relearn the language and be able to use aspects of Russia in my writing.

Yeah... so I'm off.

Why not? Plenty of people do it and generally get better grades than if they didn't...

Lots of colloges let you defer. I plan to apply, get accepted, and defer. My top choice (now JHU) lets you defer.

I've seen some anecdotal evidence that many schools now are taking a neutral stance, or even showing favoritism for, the acceptance of so-called "non-traditional" students.

However, I can't find any hard numbers to prove it.

In any case, I think the worst thing you can do is start a "discussion" with your parents if the only idea you have is to convince them that you are right about this.

It is your life and your future, of course. However, outside of yourself, who knows you better than they do? At the very least, you are living proof that as parents they must be doing something right.

So listen to them. You don't have to agree with everything they say, or even anything they say ... but I think you owe them and their opinions due consideration.

I still think you need to come up with a financial plan for this Russian adventure.
