Thoughts on "Smith and Jones"
Nov. 10th, 2007 12:19 amSo, this here is just a wee bit of my ramblings/impressions... which I will prolly do for all of season 3 after my rewatchings, long as I remember. :P
And it shall go under spoilers cut, since I know lots of y'all haven't watched the show. But you should. Go forth. Watch. Now. *whips* (Pwetty pweeeeeez...? *big wide eyes*)
WOW the Doctor is in a bad place. Seriously. He’s just trying as hard as he can to avoid compassion and connection, though he can’t help but get drawn in (to Earth, to the situation on the hospital, to Martha… [and no, I do not mean romantically]).
Also, Martha is socially awkward. And a geek. And this interpretation makes Freema’s acting and character consistency work so much more, and I love it, and I love Martha. ^.^
And RTD is really bad about aftermath of death. That, or the actors can’t really work in complexity. It happened in “Rose” (Mickey supposedly dead, yet Rose and the Doctor running hand in hand grinning right after) and it happens here (the supervisor guy dead, yet Martha’s ok and drooling after the Doctor a few seconds/minutes later). There’s only so much adrenaline can excuse…
Also, I really wonder about those exterior characters, like Martha’s Doctor friend who freaks out at first. Sure, Martha goes on the balcony and follows the Doctor, but this friend then goes and gets oxygen, helps patients, etc. She’s just as brave as Martha, just took some acclimation. Yet the Doctor dismisses her. It was really interesting… and got me thinking. Fanfiction time. Sort of like “Love and Monsters” but less geeky. *Muses*
*Shrugs* Generally, a really fun episode that opens the season very well. All the characters are very strong (though they don’t necessarily all stay that way through the series, I know), and it gets better with rewatching. And the Judoon are badass. Yay! ^.^
