Thomas Merton is one of my very, very favorite writers. I used that quote in Voyages of Discovery.

As for Merton -- he was a Trappist monk who happened to also be a poet and a writer. His work is all nonfiction dealing with the nature of one's relationship with God, the best known of which is The Seven Storey Mountain, his autobiography. My favorite is probably Seeds of Contemplation, but I've enjoyed all of what I've read so far.

Oooh, it's not just the Merton quote (and your story summary is a Merton quote) but the same one. And a nice little scene with the Doctor and Rose and blanket-stealing and a touch of angst. Awesome.

Now the real question: did you actually memorize which quote went with which chapter or did you look it up?

Hmmm... interesting. I'm not all that into theological texts, but if my interests shift I'll definitely check him out.

I looked it up. Honestly, I couldn't remember if it was that story or The Calm Before The Storm. My memory has always had giant holes in it.

Lois McMaster Bujold, who did one of your quotes. She wrote some really neat books, so I was just curious.

She's probably best known for the Vorkosigan series, which is sci-fi, and pretty good sci-fi. It starts with Cordelia's Honor, which is a duology about Miles's parents, but the series is about Miles Vorkosigan, a prenatally-damaged hyperactive brilliant crazy guy who works for the government (that's a rough summary).

She also has some fantasy, I think one series and some other books, but I'm not sure. I know she's got the Sharing Knife series, and then the Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls and then the Hallowed Hunt.
