As for Merton -- he was a Trappist monk who happened to also be a poet and a writer. His work is all nonfiction dealing with the nature of one's relationship with God, the best known of which is The Seven Storey Mountain, his autobiography. My favorite is probably Seeds of Contemplation, but I've enjoyed all of what I've read so far.

Hmmm... interesting. I'm not all that into theological texts, but if my interests shift I'll definitely check him out.

I looked it up. Honestly, I couldn't remember if it was that story or The Calm Before The Storm. My memory has always had giant holes in it.
