A Moffat quote I stumbled on:
"There’s this issue you’re not allowed to discuss: that women are needy. Men can go for longer, more happily, without women. That’s the truth. We don’t, as little boys, play at being married - we try to avoid it for as long as possible. Meanwhile women are out there hunting for husbands."
I will keep reminding myself that his Women Issues are most apparent in interviews, I will keep reminding myself that his Women Issues are most apparent in interviews...
He gave us Nancy, he gave us Reinette, he...
*headdesk*
(And the fact that this is such a prevalent view in tv writing in general [Martha getting engaged because that's the ONLY way she can get over the Doctor, for instance] is just.... GAH.)
-_-;;
ETA: Oh, and way to reinforce gender roles for guys too, much? Guys are allowed to be needy, and women are allowed to be independent, and it depends largely on the individual, and just.... GAH.

I don't even know what to do with this.

Date: 2008-07-09 11:28 pm (UTC)And what people never admit when they say things like this is who made women this way? It's not as if every other romantic comedy out there portrays women as lonely or missing something unless they're in a relationship. It's not as if the media and pop culture portrays "getting a man" as the most important aspect of a woman's life. It's not as if little girls' parents don't encourage them to play at getting married, while little boys' parents would think they were seriously weird if they did. It's not as if there are any outside societal influences affecting this at all! (As you can tell, I'm not always so good with the "letting it go" yet. :P)
Also-- he's wrong. The only men who try to go for as long as possible without getting married have had bad experiences, are immature, or are really, really clueless.

The same goes for "independent" men, though.

And the whole "independent" thing goes for both sexes, I agree. I just have this inkling that Moffat thinks men are somehow different in that regard, though. @_@
