'ello from across the Atlantic!
Aug. 6th, 2008 10:50 amSo here I am, safe and sound with 16 hours of sleep under my belt (and really annoying vertigo, but I get that often and that's beside the point) in my cousin's apartment. In Moscow. Which is, um, yeah, badass, though the most I've seen of Russia thus far is the airport, tiny elevators that close on you, billboards that are partially in English (there's a really bizarre amount of English everywhere), lots and lots of rain, and Russian TV. See, I haven't actually left the apartment today. First sleeping, now babysitting my grandmother. So, um, yay?
But the plug converter (the one my uncle gave me; the one my dad gave me failed) works, my compy is working, and the wireless works on my laptop. w007.
I am, however, far too lazy to post anything too detailed right now, so instead, here are Breaking Dawn thoughts:
So, yeah, this will probably make you all lose respect, but I enjoyed it. No, it's not the best book ever; I mean, it's a big bundle of really lazy writing that gets rid of any tension beyond, "Bad Guys vs. Our Main Characters," but it does keep you gripped once you get there.
But the point of the book is to make everyone happy and to end up with Daddy Vamp!Edward and Mommy Vamp!Bella having hot sex before getting themselves together and cuddling with their family and baby, and while there is a sadly large amount of "Fade to Sparkly Black", that's what we got. And I'm a sucker for happy endings right now, no matter how easy. And damn it but her vampire world, even if badly used, is pretty damn cool. And Bella actually didn't annoy me this book, and Jacob was (most of the time, anyway) the voice of sanity, and he was fun. And Meyer didn't spend her time worrying about whether parts were too squicky, though what was squicky was acknowledged. As an author, that does take guts.
So as long as I limit myself to giggling at the really easy resolutions to love triangles, Jacob's angst, newborn!Bella, Charlie, and almost anything that did not have to do with the Renesmee plot, I'm good. Because the book made me smile, and I refuse to become invested in this series in any other way. :D
Also, Tennyson was mentioned, and this made me think of
rosa_acicularis and giggle.
ETA: My grandmother has textbook GAD. I wonder if there is any way to treat 86-year-old women who can't speak English.

Date: 2008-08-07 12:55 am (UTC)I'm not surprised at the level of English on billboards. Contrary to what life here in L.A. might have taught me, English is still the Lingua Franca for a large portion of the business world. Although, nothing beats the signs in "Beautiful, Historic Chinatown" in Fresno...that are all in Spanish. heh.
*covers eyes to avoid spoilers of book just bought this afternoon*
*hugz more just because*

Hee. Hee. Hee. That is awesome.
Also, how'd you like Breaking Dawn?

Date: 2008-08-11 07:16 pm (UTC)I actually haven't started Breaking Dawn yet. It was an impulse buy while I was in Virgin getting season two of Robin Hood because it was like 20% off. I have... *does mental count while trying to visualize current 'to-be-read' stack* ...five (?) books ahead of it in queue, not counting the one I'll be finishing up on the train ride home today.
But, when I do, I'll let you know. ;-)

Date: 2008-08-11 05:07 pm (UTC)Of course. What else would I write about: actual Russian things?
And it be fun, except for the lack of sleep. Well, last night. Before that I got lots of sleep three nights in a row. I was impressed.

Ok, so if I read Breaking Dawn with low expectations and hopes for a sparkly happy ending I'll be cool with it?

Date: 2008-08-11 12:27 pm (UTC)DUDE! GET A PLAN (i.e. call the company or have dad or someone call the company so that you can get a set amount for a set price, which is much cheaper than the 15 or 20 cents per text [sending and receiving] they charge otherwise) and we can have awesome texting funtimes!
That's pretty much it, yes. And turn your feminist filter off. Some parts it goes ding.
