So, yeah, I saw this movie today. And sort of loved it, despite the fact that it made little to no sense, mainly because the female character (Helen Benson) was badass and I really really missed Keanu Reeves. (Anyone want to do a Constantine rewatch with me via AIM soon? *Cough
enigma731Cough ;)*)
But, um, yes.
Movie Thoughts:
So... what is the deal with every one of these aliens-invade-end-of-the-world movies and small children? They're always incredibly annoying, they mess stuff up and all the other characters just make exceptions for them, and this time was no exception.
And, if you're such a powerful race... why not make humanity listen rather than send a sphere with some guy down and hope he gets to the right place even though you have little to no hope in humanity anyway? I mean, you could lock the UN in their meeting hall and send a telecast if need be. Just... plot, You Make No Sense.
Nonetheless, the dynamic between Helen and her son was interesting, and Helen herself was awesome and intelligent and trying and so was the (female) Secretary of Defense (even though she was sort of a military-minded dumbass for much of it) and there was no romance between Klaaty and Helen (though I think it would have been interesting in a bizarre sort of way).
And Klaatu himself was actually pretty awesome. And Keanu's "show no emotion" thing worked very well. :P
BUT TECHNOLOGY IS EVIL, GUYS!!!! ONLY WAY TO SAVE THE PLANET IS TO GO COMPLETELY WITHOUT IT AND WHO NEEDS MEDICINE OR WARNING OR COMPROMISE OR SILLY THINGS LIKE THAT?
'Cos giving all that up was totally what the aliens did to become that advanced!
Overall, though, the premise (saving the planet at the cost of the humans, not the Klaatu thing) was interesting, and the characters had some really great interactions. The movie overall was pretty good, even if it didn't necessarily make sense.
I liked.

Date: 2008-12-22 11:44 pm (UTC)Totally didn't get that. I got the "technology=EVIL" message, which was awful.
THE ALIEN DIDN'T EVEN PERFORM HIS FUCKING SPEECH!
Wiki said they cut it, more or less, cuz ppl didn't want to be preached to about environment stuff anymore.
