Lost in Austen

21st century girl swaps places with Elizabeth Bennet and falls in love with Mr. Darcy, who later returns her affections. Is it just me, or does that show read like bad fanfiction?

Except it apparently got really good critical reviews, so... it was done well?

Any of you guys see it? It aired on ITV a while ago, and I'm intrigued.

ETA: Why does the Doctor Who timeline make no sense? So Saxon is basically elected Prime Minister about 18 months after the downfall of Harriet Jones, meaning about 18 or 19 months after Christmas (TCI). This would make the election sometime around July.

However, since Winters is the President Elect, that would put it sometime between November and January.

...Help?

ETA2: Also, how the hell does Lucy work on Harold Saxon's autobiography? He never wrote an autobiography! And since they met probably within 6 months of him coming to Earth, wouldn't that have been published already if she had been helping him with that? And why would he need her help if he'd already published the novel?

Ignoring that bit from the website, 'kay? 'Cos I'm gonna count that as a screw-up rather than discount Martha's description of his book as a "novel." Especially since I doubt even the Master would title his autobiography Kiss Me, Kill Me with a bright kiss-mark on the front while trying his damndest to get elected. (Okay, fine, I don't doubt it very much but still. Makes more sense if that's the mistake, rather than a mysterious second book that never gets mentioned in the episodes.)

I can't stand Austen, so I didn't bother with it, but a lot of my Austen-loving friends (and some who didn't really care either way) absolutely loved it.

Which is my round-about way of saying 'go for it'!

Childhood trauma?

Seriously, my mother made me watch every miniseries ever made when I was little. It was supposed to make me love them as much as her, I guess, because I was too little to read them on my own. But now whenever I try to read them, I get a few pages in and then get kinda twitch and think of a million other things I'd rather be doing and... IDK, I can't even force myself to actually read her. There's only so much grumbly Collin Firth my brain can stand (and that is the only Mr. Darcy I will ever know. ~headdesk~)

Re: Winters' being President Elect, I've always assumed that was just a dumb mistake of Rusty's; ie, not "Winters has been elected president but has yet to assume office and is inexplicably being sent to do important duties like upholding first contact policy," more "Winters has been elected US president, therefore he has some title like President Elect, right?" Make it July.

Also I bet Time Lords can write novels in their spare time, very fast. Or something. So he probably got it published the instant he arrived, and then said something about Lucy helping to shore up their connection.

No, I don't spend too much time trying to make this stuff work. XD

I've always figured RTD messed up there too, especially since Winters is only referred to as President Elect half the time, although then the complete and utter lack of international backfire makes even less sense, but since when was continuity Doctor Who's strong point?

Oh, I have no doubt the Master read maybe two Bestsellers just to get a sense of the time period , snorted, kicked a few puppies, and then wrote his up in like 2 hours. It's just, the website makes it sound like he already wrote an autobiography? Or maybe he told people he was working on one to make himself even more appealing and calm the 1% of people on whom Archangel wouldn't be fully effective?

Damn, I'm going to have to rewrite scenes, aren't I? *Grumbles*
