There's a whole theory about information being like a virus based on a book written in the seventies. I don't recall a lot, but it defined 'meme' as a unit of cultural information that propigates like a virus. So, we call these little bits of fluff 'memes' because they spread across the blogging world like a virus in the way we each gak them off each other and then others see them and do the same.

It's like that old commercial: 'You tell two friends and they'll tell two friends and they'll tell two friends...'
