Of "42" and the Lovely Miss Jones
Dec. 24th, 2007 07:17 pmJust rewatched “42”, and you know what? That episode is marvelous. Sure, it’s a bit sloppy, but you know, sloppiness sort of fits the subject matter, and the content more than makes up for it.
Oh, and there’s also the fact that the characters in this episode are just fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. The Doctor’s reaction to possessed by the sun, Martha…
You know, when I first saw Martha in SaJ, I sort of thought she was a bit of a stereotypical companion. The Doctor was testing her, and as the viewer, so was I. I just initially thought of her as a sort of checklist of companion must-haves and watched her go through the list.
Then, of course, I started to see her as more of a character. Unrequited love, family, unconditional trust, doctor… Like Shrek, this girl’s got her some layers.
I don’t know why I never realized just how complex she was, though, and how I missed her characterization in “42”, because she is absolutely brilliant in this episode. Part of the TARDIS crew, volunteers to help get the doors open, strong comraderie with the Doctor, faith in and love for him (though with an estrangement that still rears its head from time to time), self-confidence, love for her mum, acknowledgement of others, proneness to snapping at others when getting stressed, awkwardness with relationships, a commanding or a not commanding nature depending on the persons involved…
And that rather rambley ramble of rambling basically boils down to: well, Miss Jones, I liked you before and I adore you know. Fantastic character. *Adopts Nine’s grin* Fantastic!
And I totally squeaked at the “Saxon” mention. I am SUCH a fangirl. XD
