-The Doctor and Rose are legitimately having fun. They’re very in sync with one another.

-Rose has sort of become numbed to the horror… key words=sort of. She stands there and stares and watches the werewolf tear someone to pieces, and once safe, she’s bouncing over the werewolf and grinning and hugging the Doctor. She’s distancing herself and there’s relief and a craving for his physical touch and the safety he provides. Oh defense mechanisms… You know she has a hell of a nightmare that night. Possible (probable) cuddling. And then asks about the “wolf” comment. Oh I need to write this… I definitely need to write this.
-part of why he later lets himself get drawn in with Reinette, perhaps? Yes, he loves Reinette, but he goes with it because he knows it’s not safe for Rose, physically or psychologically. Not saying that’s the driving force behind his actions, but certainly a factor.

-Rose has accepted that, at some point, sacrifices must be made. Direct parallel between TUD and TaC: she won’t let Gwen stand in that archway, but when Sir Robert offers to sacrifice himself to buy them time (Doctor’s response=”Good man”), she just stands by. They’re running out of time, and it must be done.

And the season 2 arc actually works much better than I thought it did. Yes, they needed to show more grieving (if Rose gets uber mentions in s3, you’d think Nine would get some on s2… only place where they really screwed up, I think, because while it obviously happens off-screen, I would like to see it) but beyond that:

Rose gets acclimated to new Doctor, new Doc shows off and proves self, Rose and Doc in sync, Rose finds out she’s not the only one, Rose finds out she’s really not the only one, throw in some Mickey and setup for the finale, Rose and the Doctor are bonding/in sync again (and, via the possible loss of Rose, show that the Doctor REALLY cares about her), bring in some real terror and true closeness between the two of them again, make them just happy and bouncy and show how much they need each other, and tear ‘em apart.

People really don’t give RTD enough credit. Main complaint I’ve heard about S2 is that people don’t like the direction Rose’s character has gone/the romantic relationship. Because really, S2 is about that relationship between the Doctor and Rose, not just the Doctor. It’s about their interactions and experiences and how they affect one another, it’s about their travels through time and space, and some people don’t like that. So if you think it should be just about the Doctor, you’re going to be disappointed.

I love Doctor Who. XD
