Just Written a Review...
Jul. 7th, 2005 10:11 pmWell, I've just written a review to Blood Canticle and put it up on amazon... *Sighs* Good book, not up to the standards of the others and consequently not one I like... It just wasn't.... Lestat. T-T
But I can't blame her for it, and under the circumstances, I think Anne Rice did a spectacular job. I mean, I can hardly believe that she was even able to write it. I can't even really write when I'm semi-upset, and with the death of her hubby....
It's really the whole religion thing, though. A writer shouldn't let their personal beliefs affect their characters so much. A character should not just be an extension of self. It's easier to do it this way, and God knows loads of writers do.... It's almost impossible to avoid.... But it still should be SOMEWHAT avoided. *Sighs*
W/e. I'm off.
Ta mates.

Date: 2005-07-07 09:34 pm (UTC)I think characters are extensions of self, like it or not. The problem with the later VCs is Anne forces an unnatural extension and, what's worse, forces the reader to read the books from her perspective.
Compare the last VC books with LotR. Tolkien was of course a Catholic and if you want look at LotR as a Catholic-influence heavy book you can, but you aren't forced to. He wants people to make their own interpretations. It doesn't matter what religion (if any) you belong to, and it doesn't matter what Tolkien's intentions are cause he wants us to read the books as ourselves and make personal connections and interpretations *waves "Yay Tolers!" flag*
With the VCs Anne is forcing us to read them HER WAY. She doesn't let the readers make up their own minds or use their imaginations or make personal connections. Irritation!!! And she forces unnatural aspects to the stories and warps the characters....blahhhhh
Thanks for letting me rant X-D I got carried away...
